Barrier methods are techniques used to prevent the rusting of iron and steel by creating a physical barrier that prevents oxygen and water from reaching the metal surface.

Rusting requires BOTH oxygen and water: 4Fe(s) + 3O₂(g) + 2xH₂O(l) → 2Fe₂O₃·xH₂O(s) (hydrated iron(III) oxide = rust)

By excluding one or both, rusting is prevented.

Limitation of Barrier Methods

If the barrier is scratched or damaged:

  • Oxygen and water can reach the iron beneath
  • Rusting begins at the exposed site
  • The protection is lost at the damaged area

This is the key disadvantage compared to sacrificial protection (galvanising), which continues to protect even when scratched.

Note: Galvanising with zinc provides BOTH barrier protection AND sacrificial protection — it is the best of both worlds.
