A spectator ion is an ion that is present in a reaction mixture but does not actually participate in the chemical change, appearing unchanged in both form and charge on the reactant and product sides of the chemical equation. Spectator ions are identified by writing the full ionic equation — splitting all aqueous (aq) substances into their constituent ions and leaving solids, liquids, and gases intact — and then cancelling any ions that appear identically on both sides, leaving the net ionic equation that shows only the species directly involved in the reaction. For example, in the neutralisation of hydrochloric acid with sodium hydroxide (HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O), the full ionic equation is H⁺ + Cl⁻ + Na⁺ + OH⁻ → Na⁺ + Cl⁻ + H₂O, where Na⁺ and Cl⁻ are spectators and the net ionic equation reduces to H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O, revealing that all strong acid-strong base neutralisations are fundamentally the same reaction. Recognising spectator ions is essential for understanding the underlying chemistry of precipitation, neutralisation, and displacement reactions — it strips away the non-participating species to reveal the actual chemical change taking place. In IGCSE, you must be able to identify spectator ions in a given reaction, write net ionic equations, and remember that only aqueous species are split into ions while solids, liquids, and gases are never ionised.
