Discovery
First element discovered in modern times with a recorded discoverer. In 1669, German alchemist Hennig Brand boiled down urine and heated the residue with sand, obtaining a white waxy substance that glowed in the dark.
Allotropes
White Phosphorus (P₄): Waxy, toxic, glows greenish, ignites spontaneously in air above ~30 °C. Stored under water. Lethal dose ~50 mg.
Red Phosphorus: Stable, non-toxic, dark red powder. Used on matchbox striking surfaces — friction converts a tiny amount to white P, which ignites.
