Cutting tools are industrial tools — such as drill bits, glass cutters and saw blades — used to cut, grind or bore through hard materials like concrete, stone and metals. Many cutting tools are coated or tipped with diamond because it is the hardest natural substance known and can cut through almost any other material.
The key IGCSE exam point is why diamond is so well suited to cutting: each carbon atom forms four strong covalent bonds to four neighbouring carbon atoms in a rigid tetrahedral network (a giant covalent structure). Because every carbon is bonded to four others in three dimensions, there is no weak plane or layer for the structure to split along, and enormous force is needed to break it. This makes diamond extremely hard, so it keeps a sharp cutting edge and resists being scratched or worn away during use.
