Calcium is a chemical element with the symbol Ca and atomic number 20. It is a silvery-grey alkaline earth metal — the fifth most abundant element in Earth’s crust. Its compounds (limestone, marble, chalk, gypsum) have been used in construction for millennia. The name comes from Latin calx (“lime”).

Discovery

Calcium compounds were used since antiquity. The pure metal was first isolated in 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy via electrolysis of lime (CaO) and mercuric oxide.
