Equilibrium occurs when all forces acting on an object are balanced, producing a resultant force of zero. In this state:
- A stationary object remains at rest.
- A moving object continues at constant speed in a straight line.
Equilibrium does not mean no forces are acting — it means the net effect of all forces is zero. Examples include a book resting on a table (weight downward, normal force upward) or a car cruising at constant speed (driving force = resistive forces).
