A compound contains different types of atoms joined strongly by chemical bonds. Because atoms are arranged differently in compounds than in the original elements, compounds often have very different properties.
Examples from the source include water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), magnesium oxide (MgO), sodium chloride (NaCl), and iron sulfide (FeS).
Compounds have fixed composition: the relative amount of each element cannot vary. This fixed ratio is shown using a chemical formula.
