All substances are made of tiny particles called Atoms. In the source lesson, an atom is defined as the smallest part of an element that can exist on its own.

Atoms are extremely small, with a diameter of about 0.00000001 cm, and can only be imaged indirectly using specialized tools such as electron microscopes or scanning tunnelling microscopes.

One atom on its own does not show the visible bulk properties of a material. Properties like color, shininess, solidity, and melting happen when many atoms are present together.
